Is IP65 Enough for Supermarket Lighting?

When selecting lights for a supermarket, clients often ask whether IP65 is sufficient. In most back-of-house and fresh-food wet zones the answer is yes, but it is not a single standard for the whole store. A supermarket has dry sales aisles as well as humid fresh, wash-down and receiving areas, and protection needs differ. Here's a practical view based on field experience.

Where IP65 is typically enough
IP65 means complete dust protection and resistance to low-pressure water jets. For floor washing in fresh zones, condensation around cold cabinets and splash in back-of-house wash areas, this rating usually provides solid protection.

rated IP65 in these positions report a clear drop in fogging and short-circuit issues.

Not every area needs IP65
Central sales floors and ambient grocery aisles are relatively dry. There the priorities are often colour quality, colour rendering and glare control rather than high protection. Specifying a higher rating across the whole store raises cost without always adding value. Matching protection to each zone is more rational than a single rule for all.

A stated IP65 rating is only the starting point. Sealing design, cable-entry treatment and installation quality directly affect real performance. Moisture can still enter if interfaces are poorly handled.

Choosing a well-built IP65 LED tri proof light and sealing every connection carefully during installation is more practical than simply chasing a higher IP figure.

Receiving canopies, semi-outdoor corridors or wash rooms that see frequent high-pressure cleaning face heavier condensation and splash, so protection details should be checked more strictly.

is used in back-of-house aisles, its profile sheds water more readily and helps reduce long-term risk.

Even a suitable protection rating needs periodic cleaning and inspection of seals. Oil mist, dust and cleaner residues in fresh areas accelerate ageing. Simple upkeep allows IP65 fixtures to last longer in a real store.

Overall, IP65 is sufficient and cost-effective for supermarket fresh, cold and back-of-house wet zones; dry sales areas do not always need it. Matching protection to the zone works better than raising the rating everywhere.

If you are selecting lights for a supermarket or some areas have suffered fogging or water ingress, share the locations and cleaning methods. I can help judge whether IP65 is appropriate. When protection matches the area, store lighting becomes far more reliable.
